| College-Bound Senior ScholarshipsAll of the following scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors. Interested students must complete and return the Scholarship Application Form and any supportive narrative information to the Regina Elementary School office, the Regina Jr./Sr. High School office, or the Catholic Community Foundation office no later than Tuesday, April 15, 2008 by 3:00 p.m. Any applications received after that date and time will NOT be considered. This scholarship was established in 1987 to honor the memory of Mr. David Braverman, who immigrated to the United States from Russia when he was 17 and did not speak English. He and his brother became owners of grocery stores, which eventually grew into the current Hawkeye Food Systems, Inc. of Coralville. The selection criteria include grade point average (2.75 or higher), verified enrollment in an accredited college or university, a recommendation of a Regina faculty member, and community service.
This scholarship was established in 2004 by Regina parents and other supporters in honor of the legendary Regina track and cross-country coach Bob Brown for his motivational and inspirational actions on and off the track and field. The recipient of this scholarship must be a graduating senior pursuing further education at a four-year college/university; a GPA of 3.0 or better; proven *financial need; involvement in school, parish or community service and participation in two or more varsity sports during their high school career.
Kathy Dore ’68 has received distinguished alumni honors at both Regina and the University of Iowa and named as one of the Power 100 Women in the Entertainment Industry. Currently, she is president of TV and radio for CanWest Media Works and former president of Bravo Network. Kathy has been an energetic participant in minorities and young women’s internship and mentoring programs. Therefore, Kathy designated the recipient of this award to be a young woman who is a graduating senior, who has demonstrated the qualities of leadership, scholarship, and compassion throughout her high school years, and who plans to major in business.
The recipient of this scholarship memorializing Brendan Fisher, a 2000 Regina graduate and 2004 Marquette University graduate, must be a graduating senior attending a Jesuit university or college in the fall (must show verification of enrollment at the college). Preference will be given to a student attending Marquette University. Other selection criteria are based on involvement in interscholastic athletics and/or school activities and community service. Applicants must provide a brief statement of why they chose to attend a Jesuit college.
Mr. and Mrs. Gaffey have children and grandchildren who are Regina alumni and also grandchildren who are current Regina students. The recipient of this scholarship must show verified enrollment in a vocational program, a community college, or a four-year college or university. The primary selection criterion for this award is for the applicant to have overcome some non-financial, personal challenge. The applicant should also include evidence of participation in school, parish, or community activities. The essay portion of the form must detail the personal challenge overcome by the student.
Margaret and Leonard “Bud” Gough have been advocates of quality Catholic education for many years. The couple’s three daughters and one granddaughter are all Regina graduates. The Gough’s highly desire to help a Regina graduating senior continue their Catholic education during their college years by awarding this scholarship to a recipient who will attend a four-year Catholic college/university in the fall. *Financial need is also a primary concern for this award.
This scholarship was established to perpetuate Dr. Krause’s love for the medical field. At the time of her death, she served as the University of Iowa Women's Basketball team physician and was a board certified pediatrician at the University of Iowa. The recipient of this scholarship must plan on majoring in a pre-medicine, nursing, biology or other health science curriculum in a post secondary vocational program, community college or four-year college or university. Selection criteria is based on academic performance (3.0 or better GPA); involvement in school and parish activities and community service.
This scholarship was established to honor Jean McCoy and her involvement at the Regina Catholic Education Center. Jean McCoy is the loving grandmother of two Regina graduates and nine current Regina students. The recipient of this scholarship must be a graduating senior pursuing a post-secondary degree at a four-year college. Additional requirements for applying include a minimum GPA of 3.0 or better, and involvement in school, parish, or community service. Preference will be given to female students who participated in any high school athletic sport.
Mr. O’Brien was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Church and a well-known figure at the University of Iowa Athletic Department where he worked for 33 years. All five of Edward and Kathleen O’Brien’s children attended Regina, including Regina High School’s Resource teacher, Jo Thiessen, and Regina Elementary Assistant Principal, Jeanne Von Feldt. This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who has demonstrated both academic and athletic accomplishment. The selection criteria include grade point average (2.67 or higher), participation in interscholastic athletics, and community service.
This award has been given since 1978. Mr. Sheker maintained life-long standards for excellence in carpentry and communications. Thus, his family felt it was of utmost importance to award this scholarship to a graduating senior on the basis of *financial need, interest in and further academic pursuit of vocational training, business courses, or health-related field at a technical, vocational, or community college. An award of up to $500 is paid directly to the winning applicant.
*Financial need is shown by qualifying for financial aid through Regina’s Private School Aid Service (PSAS) tuition assistance program due no later than April 15, 2008.
