About Alumni

Once a Regal…Always a Regal

In September 1958, Regina High School opened its doors for the first time with 295 students enrolled. In 1969, Regina expanded its student scope to admit 7th and 8th grade students. The Regina Elementary Center was added to the campus in 1987, serving K-6th grade students. In 1999, the entire PreK-12th grade complex was renamed the Regina Inter-Parish Catholic Education Center to aptly reflect Regina’s position as the collective parish school for each of the four Iowa City parishes. Regina’s current student enrollment PreK-12 is 1,000, with an additional 250+ public school students also served in the weekly religious education program.

There are currently 3,351 Regina alumni, 127 of whom are deceased. Many Regina alums (1,561) have either chosen to remain or have returned to live and work in Iowa City and its surrounding communities. An additional 493 Regina alumni live elsewhere in the State of Iowa and 1,003 others throughout the United States. Fifteen alumni have addresses outside of the country. School officials report our newest alums, the Class of 2008, have 100% of their class attending post secondary institutions.

Following in the Regina tradition of service to school, church, and community many alums continue to make a difference in their communities, state and in the world. Locally, Regina alumni have held the positions of Iowa State Representative, Johnson County Supervisor, Iowa City Mayor, Iowa City Council member, and board member on numerous non-profit boards. This scenario is repeated by other alumni across the nation.

We encourage all alumni to answer the call to serve not only other charitable organizations, but their alma mater as well with these volunteer opportunities:

Regina Alumni Advisory Councils

Established in 2006 the Regina Alumni Council provides insight, leadership and support to the school and Foundation with an emphasis on:

  • providing and promoting opportunities for alumni participation in alumni and
  • increasing communication between Regina and its alumni, securing meaningful input from alums
  • securing meaningful feedback from alumni
  • consideration of alumni mentoring and internship programs
  • increasing alumni financial support

If you are interested or know someone who might be interested in the Regina Alumni Advisory Council contact April Rouner at the Catholic Community Foundation (319) 354-5866 or ccf@mchsi.com.

Regina Alumni Annual Appeal

Coming to a mailbox near you soon. The 2008-2009 Annual Appeal will focus on center-wide technology needs. $125,000 of the overall Appeal goal will be directed to replacing aging tech equipment. Regina Elementary needs to purchase 17 teacher computer workstations ($1,500 each), 10 computers in the computer lab and five LCD projectors ($1,250 each). LCD projectors allow teachers to display video, images, or computer data on a screen or other flat surface (modern version of the overhead projector). The Jr./Sr. High needs 12 new laptops, 11 LCD projectors, 12 whiteboards ($1,675 each), and five document cameras. The fine arts department is also in need of the Adobe Creative Suite software ($10,000 license).

Even though these technology needs are immediate, Regina’s operational budget cannot accommodate such a mass purchase. So, we are asking for your help on these important educational tools, which allow our teachers and students to stay educationally competitive with peers worldwide. The remainder of the Appeal funds will be used for other prioritized needs.

Regina Alumni Flag Bearers

A new tradition began at Regina graduation ceremonies in 2004 that allows alumni to pass the torch and tradition on to the newest grads. Each graduating class since 1959 has a representative to carry their flag/banner to usher the soon-to-be graduates to their seats just prior to graduation ceremonies. It is a great “Hats Off to Thee” message and a salute to the heritage of a Regina Catholic education.

If you would like to volunteer to carry a flag for your class on graduation day 2008 (Sunday, May 24), please contact April Rouner at the Catholic Community Foundation (319) 354-5866 or ccf@mchsi.com.

Class Agents

Maintaining the alumni database in our transient society can be difficult. The Catholic Community Foundation would like to secure one person for each graduating class who would agree to keep us updated on the addresses and emails of others in their class. Additionally, with current email addresses we can save substantial printing and mailing costs of newsletters and other publications.

Please contact April Rouner at the Catholic Community Foundation (319) 354-5866 or ccf@mchsi.com to assist in this way.
